Build a first-party data foundation before optimising media.

Google’s September measurement update puts the operational priority in the right place: better bidding and reporting begin with usable, permissioned business signals—not another dashboard tab.

01

Start with the decision, not the destination.

List the commercial decisions that media and analytics must support: which lead sources deserve more budget, where conversion rate falls, and which customers create value after the first transaction. For each decision, name the one signal that would improve it. A qualified lead status is more useful than ten extra page events if it changes bidding or sales follow-up.

02

Create a signal contract.

For every important event, document its owner, trigger, consent condition, destination and failure mode. A sensible lead contract may include lead_submitted, lead_qualified and sale_won, each with a stable ID. Keep personal data out of analytics event labels. The point is not an enormous schema; it is an agreement that marketing, product and sales can audit.

03

Prove the path before automating it.

Run a single controlled test: submit a lead, inspect the tag, validate the event in analytics, confirm it reaches the CRM, then verify the quality update can return to the reporting layer. Only after the handoffs are reliable should you expand audiences, values or automated bidding inputs.

Release checklist

  • Map each business decision to one reliable signal.
  • Record consent and data-minimisation requirements.
  • Assign an owner for each handoff.
  • Test the complete path with a real record.
  • Review data quality before changing budget.

Why this is current

Google’s September 2026 measurement release expanded its data and measurement tooling and framed the work around a stronger data foundation, multiple signals and causal proof. The practical implication is clear: fix signal quality before expecting platform AI to produce trustworthy growth.
