Protect measurement while Google Ads becomes more AI-led.
As automation absorbs more campaign-level choices, the human job shifts toward framing the right goal, feeding it reliable signals and judging whether the result is commercially real.
Make the conversion hierarchy explicit.
Separate observation events from optimisation events. A page view or form start may explain friction, but it should not necessarily steer spend. Label one primary business outcome, its quality proxy and its diagnostic events in the account plan.
Keep a change log.
When targeting, landing pages, creative, prices and conversion definitions change at once, no report can explain the outcome. Record date, owner, reason and expected effect. This simple discipline makes automated campaign learning easier to challenge and preserve.
Use a weekly exception review.
Do not interrogate every fluctuation. Review meaningful movements: changes in qualified conversion rate, value per lead, search demand, spend concentration and tracking health. The aim is to find exceptions that need a decision, not to manually override every automated action.
Weekly checklist
- Verify primary conversion health.
- Check quality, not only conversion volume.
- Read the change log beside performance.
- Investigate material concentration shifts.
- Document the decision and next review date.
Why this is current
Google’s September 2026 measurement update positions strong data, multiple signals and causal evidence as the foundation for AI-era media. That is the right guardrail for an AI-led search account.
