Make AI-assisted product analytics auditable.

AI can shorten the path from a question to a chart. It cannot decide whether the event definition was sound, the comparison fair or the decision worth making.

01

Write the question before opening the tool.

Use a decision-shaped prompt: “Where does verified onboarding fall after the new step?” is better than “analyse onboarding”. It defines the audience, action and comparison and gives the result an owner.

02

Expose definitions beside outputs.

Every useful insight needs the event, timeframe, segment and denominator. Put those four details in the report or decision note. This allows someone else to reproduce the work and catches a surprising number of confident but unusable answers.

03

Make AI a first-pass analyst.

Let it surface patterns, propose cuts and summarise changes. Then have a human check event semantics, missing data, sample size and plausible confounders before the recommendation becomes a release, campaign or roadmap decision.

Audit checklist

  • Decision question stated upfront.
  • Events and denominators visible.
  • Segment logic documented.
  • Human checks for data quality.
  • Outcome and owner recorded.

Why this is current

Mixpanel updated its AI product-intelligence story in October 2026, reflecting a wider shift: as teams ship more quickly, the bottleneck becomes understanding. Strong instrumentation and transparent analysis remain the answer.
